First Aid Training / CPR

Red Cross First Aid Training / CPR and AED

Your role in the EMS system includes 4 basic steps. Describe what are they?

1) Recognize that an Emergency existsRealize abnormal or unusual activity (noises, sights, odors, appearances/behavior)

2) Decide to Act - Make a decision to respond to the situation. This step maybe hindered by panic, fear of disease, or just being unsure.

3) Activate  the EMS system - Call local emergency number, depending on situation (9-9-9,9-1-1, etc.)

4) Give care - Take care of the victim until further help arrives. This may be through giving rescue breaths if the person is not breathing, or simply just laying them in recovery position and monitoring the situation.

You walk into health class and Mr Charman is lying on the floor.  Explain / describe the steps that you will take  once you have "decided to act". ( once you start your care you find that he is unconscious but IS breathing)

  1. Look around for potential hazards (e.g. chemical spills, fire, smoke, debris, etc.)
  2. If there are no hazards then proceed to get response from Mr. Charman.
  3. Once there is no response then call local emergency number (9-9-9).
  4. Check for broken bones, before turning him over facing up (2 limbs & 2 legs).
  5. Check airway, by tilting head (lift chin and push forehead)
  6. As he is breathing, put him in recovery position by extending out victim's opposite arm straight above his forehead, checking his legs to make sure they are in suitable position to turn him over.
  7. Monitor situation until EMS arrives.
Describe the Front to Back  / Back to Front method of caring for an unconscious breathing patient.

To put victim in recovery position:

  1. Extend opposite (from your side) arm directly out from the body, inline with the body.
  2. Pull victim's opposite (from your side) leg up, bending the knees.
  3. Take hold of victim's clothes around their hip, support their neck, and roll victim away from you using body weight, onto his/her side.
  4. Check that victim has his/her head resting on their arm, and airway is unobstructed.

Health Goal

We have already talked about the basic elements of goal setting, but as a reminder, we use the SMART approach to goal setting:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely
For this assignment, we ask that you choose a health-related goal that you want to focus on for the duration of this semester. The goal you choose to work on should fulfill the following requirements:

a. It should be a goal that needs to be completed by the end of the semester.
b. It should be a goal that follows the SMART elements noted above
c. Keep in mind that goals that are completely under our control (i.e. losing weight) are easier to control then goals that are, to some extent, out of our control (e.g. making a team involves decisions made by others and many variables that are beyond your control)

Steps for achieving a goal

1.Select one goal to work toward.
2.List what you will do to reach this goal.
3.Identify others who can help you and support your efforts.
4.Give yourself a specific period of time to reach your goal.
5.Build in checkpoints to evaluate how you are doing.
6.Give yourself a reward once you’ve achieved the goal.

1. The area or I would like to change or improve is:

Physical Dimension

2. Pick a primary goal in your lifestyle within the above mentioned Wellness Wheel
area that you want to work on achieving.

Do some excercising, by swimming and dry-land training.

3. What health benefits would you receive if you made a change in this area?

Become fitter and have more endurance in the water.

4. What difficulties might make achieving this goal a challenge?

I have to be patient, because I getting and maintaining good technique takes a lot of time and effort before I can sprint, so I have to really concentrate.

5. The people you will ask for support and assistance are:

My parents and Mr. Goh.

In what way will they help you?

They will help train me and watch out for my stroke.

6. Three specific steps involved in making this change/improvement are (be specific)

a. Start with building endurance and stamina, swimming long distances
b. Once stamina is gained, achieve good stroke before sprinting.
c. Train 6 days/week

7. How will you record of your progress?

Record my 25m and 50m time for each stroke every 15 days until completion date.

By December, I want my 25m freestyle time to be under 13 seconds and 50m freestyle time to be under 30.

8. Date you will start / have started: 20 August 2012
9. Date you are going to complete:16 December 2012
10. Reward for completion (should be appropriate): A meal at CoCo Ichibanya.

Self Esteem Survey

Is the source a good source of information?

I think the source is not a very good source of information because the not all results apply to me. Also, I think the results are a generalization based on the answers given - no one is the same.

How accurate do you think the results are?

The results are reasonably accurate, but some of them don't apply to me. As mentioned, one's psychology isn't something which can be understood with just a few general questions.

In what circumstances might results be invalid?

If the answerer answers inaccurately, the results can be invalid. Also, different people have different preoccupations and psychological state, and sometimes the results that are for most people may not be applicable to certain individuals.

Are these types of online sites good to have available?

To some extent, they do more good than harm. These type of sites are good for people seeking advice and guidance, but it is also done for a commercial purpose, which can affect the integrity of the advice given.

Cut from the Team

Dear Anonymous,

We have received your letter regarding your cut from your school team. From our newspaper staff, we would like to say it’s OK. You have your whole life in front of you, so you should not fret over small cuts from your team. Instead, make use of this opportunity to learn and grow from this experience. Accept the mistakes you have made and build off them. After all, some of the best athletes in the world today have been cut from their teams before ending up in the position they are in today. Now, you should use the free time you have for your enjoyment. Do what makes you feel happy. You may end up finding another one of your strengths through this. Also, when you have found this strength, you must set realistic goals to help your strengths develop into much more. Accept your abilities and make them assets! Our last word of advice is ofcourse, to never give up.

Cheers,

Rahul & Tong

Health Interview

Interview an older person (at least 25 years old) you know who seems to be especially healthy. Complete the questions below as a blog post in your own blog.

What is his/her relationship to you?

Mother

1. Have you always been as healthy as you are now? Please explain.

Yes, since she was small my mum had been practicing a good diet, and she never had a prolonged/chronic illness.
2. What particular health habits in the following areas do you practice, that contribute to your level of health?

Nutritional Habits: Apart from veggies, she tries to eat only during meals and not in between. She does not eat junk food at all.

Fitness Habits: Working at home, occasionally gardening. Also tries to walk or cycle instead of using the car when possible.

Coping with Stress: 1. Compose herself
                                 2. Go over the problem
                                 3. Considering all options before making a decision. If unable to do so at the moment, she will take a break by doing something she likes before coming back to the problem.
Dealing with Conflicts: Forgive and/or forget when possible, try to think of solutions without becoming too attached to the problem.

Keeping a Positive Attitude: Thinking about people who are worse off, believing that problems and conflicts are natural life events.

Any Additional Healthy Habits: None

3. How did you develop these habits? Please explain.

These habits were developed over time through her own and other people's experience, with much influence from her mother, a nurse, especially when it comes to nutrition and hygiene . She also learned about health from educational campaigns in school.
4. What motivates you to practice a healthy lifestyle?

She wants to live an active life where she can help herself, and after seeing a lot of sick people in the hospital where her mum was working, she decided she wanted to be healthy.
5. Create a question of your own that you would like to ask regarding this person’s healthy lifestyle. Make sure that the question allows your interviewee to expand on his/her thoughts (not a one word answer).

Question: Is there anything you think you should/could improve on?

Answer: More excercise, e.g. a sport. to add from just daily chores and gardening. A regular excercise routine would guarantee consistent excercise.
